“Seinfeld” is no longer on the air, and some are still not quite over that. Luckily for the die-hard fans out there, they can take a virtual tour of the iconic apartment that was home to the show's cast and their antics for nine seasons.
Thanks to the Oculus Rift, a newly developed virtual reality gaming headset that users strap onto their faces to immerse themselves in games and simulations, fans can navigate Jerry’s Manhattan apartment and inspect every last detail, right down to the Superman statue on the back bookshelf.
The 3D model of the apartment was made by "Seinfeld" super-fan Greg Miller, who currently works in tech support and hopes to shift his career focus into 3D modeling. He wanted to make something for the Oculus Rift that would be easy to put together and would have some appeal to the average user.
“It was really a matter of timing,” Miller told The Huffington Post. “I’ve been a 'Seinfeld' fan for a long time. Just coincidently, I recently decided to watch the entire series from Episode 1 to the last.”
With the show on his brain and a desire to build something simple, the "Seinfeld" set became the obvious choice. After roughly two months of coding, the 27-year-old’s tribute was finished.
If you have access to the Oculus Rift, you can download the apartment for free at the “Jerry’s Place VR” website. If you aren’t fortunate enough to have access to the VR tech, you can take the virtual tour with the following video:
Miller isn’t done 3D modeling and is brainstorming different TV sets to work on. When asked what he might be setting his sights on next, he said he was torn between two popular sitcoms.
“I think the ‘I Love Lucy’ set would be an interesting one to make. There could be a button to toggle from black and white to color,” he said. “It reminds me of the classic 'Calvin and Hobbes,' where they talk about the past being in black and white and the future switches to color. I think it would be fun to do something from a different era.”
While an older sitcom would be fun for Miller, he says he hasn’t ruled out doing a more modern show. A fan recently sent him a floor plan for the office from “The Office.”
